Scottish Diary | 16 May 2017

The fourth day in Scotland was dedicated to the journey around the most famous lake in Scotland and probably even in the World, Loch Ness. We started our way in Fort Augustus and went on the journey in the counter-clockwise because this way brings more spectacular views. Our first stop was Suidhe Viewpoint. Here you can enjoy amazing views over the landscape which is similar to the landscape on the Isle of Skye – less overgrown. Which is no surprise here because of the very strong wind. So if you come here be prepared to battle for your balance with the wind.

After the windy experience at Suidhe Viewpoint, we stopped at calm Foyers Falls. It’s a waterfall on the River Foyers, which feeds Loch Ness and has a fall of 50 meters. It is a short walk down to the falls that continue down to the shores of Loch Ness. This is a lovely walk through Scotland woods. When we saw all the above we were on the road for about two to three hours. That is why we decided to take a short break on the north side of the lake at The Dores Inn. We had a daily soup there which is always served with bread and butter. Perfect warm snack before the rainy shower.

The longest stop we had was the capital of the Highlands, Inverness. Because of the rain, we went to hide to an old covered Victorian Market. There we met the nicest Peter who opened his coffee and ice cream Milk Bar four months ago. Before his own café, he worked at Costa for eight years as a manager and this year he finally had enough courage to start his own business. His pure milk ice cream is heaven! Maybe the thought to eat ice cream milk flavored doesn’t have the wow factor but once you taste it you can’t believe how good it is. The whole bar is very nicely decorated and it is a definite must-taste when you are in Inverness. Also if you are a coffee lover he has great coffee. His specialty is espresso with a scoop of milk ice cream. Marko’s parents tried it and said that is was wonderful. While they were sipping their coffee I went on a stroll around the city center.

When we all meet up back together we went towards Urquhart Castle. Unfortunately, we had a too long stop in Inverness and were too late to visit the ruins of the castle. Our whole trip around Loch Ness lasted for about seven to eight hours. So if you will go around this mysterious lake take the whole day and try to start early so then you will see everything you like. To end the fourth day in the spirit that this trip origins from, we went to the Fort Augustus Golf Club. Because of his knee injury, Marko can’t play these days but at least he was at the course and did a swing with the “special club” that is accompanying him every step of our trip.
