Scottish Diary | 19 May 2017

After six days of exploring stunning Scotland Marko’s injured leg started to color yellow (later in the day, he learned that this means that the hematoma is healing). It looked quite bad and we were both worried so we decided that we will stay at home and enjoy in out fairytale cottage surrounded by nature and sheep while Marko’s parents went to visit whiskey distillery and nearby castle.

The Auchnascraw Mill was our first Airbnb stay in Scotland. It is situated in the Highlands in Cairngorms National Park near the village of Tomintoul, known as the “Highest Village in the Highlands”. There are sheep farms and endless meadows around the place. It’s called Auchnascraw Mill because this cottage was a mill used for grinding oats between 1830 and Second World War. After that period, the mill was not used anymore and it slowly started falling apart. Until the Reid family decided that they’re going to renovate the mill. It took them seven years to renovate it and now – across the street from their home – stands a completely renovated wonderful cottage with magical spirit. They kept the original stone walls, gear wheels, and unique ironwork. It’s a great place to stay because you live in a home with rich history and it’s very cozy, especially with the working fireplace. It feels like an escape from the everyday world to the relaxing place to read books and enjoy the nature.

On top of its natural position it is also beautifully furnished and interiorly designed. It has a large living room with amazing views over hills scattered with sheep, kitchen with top-of the-line appliances, utility room with washer and dryer, and two charming bedrooms. There is also a space between bedrooms with a sofa which can be made into a king-size bed so the house can easily host six people.

It’s truly a wonderful home away from home. Very relaxing and calm. The Reid family is always there for you if you need anything. They welcomed us with lemon-almond-poppy cake and brought us fresh eggs for breakfast in the morning. On the other hand, they give you all the privacy you want. This is one of the most charming Airbnb stays we’ve ever had and I very much hope to come back one day.

Dear Megan and Sean, thank you for everything! 🙂
